Cops were chasing car theft suspects when one of the suspects was hit by a car and killed on I-77
On May 3, 2026 shortly after 10:00 p.m., a car theft suspect was killed on Interstate 77 in Charlotte, NC.
Cops were alerted to a vehicle reported stolen from Old Pineville Road. Officers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop; however, the driver refused to stop and cops lost sight of the vehicle.

Other officers got in on the chase and the suspect vehicle crashed on I-77. The two occupants in the stolen vehicle exited the vehicle and fled on foot on I-77.
One suspect was taken into custody. The second suspect ran across the lanes of interstate traffic. A passing motorist then hit the suspect accidentally with a car.
The suspect was knocked into the air and died on impact, the suspect came crashing onto the hard asphalt, disfiguring their face.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the suspect remained on scene and was not deemed at fault.
