The inmate told jail staff that the jail shoes were too small, staff told him to cram his feet in them which caused his feet to touch dirty floors and led to toes cut off. Escaping on foot was not an option for this inmate
Aaron Hannon, 57, is suing the Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte, NC after poor jail conditions and the wrong shoe size caused his toes to be amputated. The lawsuit was filed in October 2026. Follow Charlotte Alerts on Instagram.

Aaron was arrested in 2024. While in jail custody Aaron was given a flimsy pair of jail slides that were too small for Aaron’s big feet. Aaron asked the jail staff for bigger slides. The jail staff refused to give Aaron bigger shoes and told him to cram his feet into the undersized slides.
Aaron told the jail staff he had underlining medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiac disease, hypertension and neuropathy. A female jail employee sued the jail claiming sexual harassment.
Aaron was still made to wear the small shoes. Aaron’s toes touched the dirty cold jail floor constantly, even when he was in the filthy jail showers. Aaron also asked for medication in the jail, but was told no by the jail staff. The jail was deemed unsafe by state inspectors and ordered to depopulate.
Aaron was released from jail within a month of being arrested. Aaron contracted a foot infection while he was in the jail. The infection led to around 4 to 5 of Aaron’s toes being amputated.
Aaron struggles with his balance now. Aaron went to a lawyer and filed a lawsuit against Sheriff Garry Mcfadden and the jail claiming he got inadequate care in the jail that resulted in his toe infection.
Aaron had an heightened risk for diabetic infection.
