Cops were called to a scene near Lasalle St. While arriving at the call, cops saw a group of black people talking and congregating, unrelated to the original 911 call. Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department officers get arrested all the time, and we are first to cover those arrests.
Instead of going to the original 911 call, cops approached the group of black people thinking they were involved in illegal activity. Cops had no probable cause and are not allowed to approach and detain people for no reason; hence racial profiling.
As cops approached the group, one of the men began walking away. Cops then gave unlawful orders for the man to stop, but the man continued to walk away. The man had a gun and cops shot him. The man died from the shooting.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is the lead investigating agency in this case. Charlotte cops often times automatically assume just because a black person is in a bad neighborhood, that the black person is automatically a criminal.
Cops will then violate the victim’s constitutional rights by illegal search and seizure, and then arrest the victim for no reason or for a made up unlawful reason. This deadly encounter is a prime example of racial profiling and 4th amendment constitutional violations.
