Eric Pompa was crumpled up when he ran into an 18-wheeler truck while he was driving the wrong way on I-77
Eric Pompa, 31, was killed in a Interstate 77 crash on May 16, 2025 in Iredell County, North Carolina. Follow Charlotte Alerts on Instagram. Eric had just moved from Utah to North Carolina. He also had just purchased a brand new home in Charlotte.

Around 2 a.m. Eric was driving a pickup truck in the wrong way direction of traffic when he ran head on into an 18-wheeler truck.

The crash crumpled Eric up and sent both vehicles into a fiery blaze. Eric died on scene. The 18-wheeler truck driver was badly injured from the head on collision, but survived.

The crash backed traffic up for hours. It took a significant amount of time for fire crews to put the fire out. The 18-wheeler truck was turned upside down from the impact. Click here to see more highway crashes.
A crane had to be brought in to lift the 18-wheeler off of the highway and onto a dump truck. Emergency officials say alcohol intoxication played a role in the crash.
