On December 12, 2025 a judge dismissed the manslaughter case against Officer Jason Fletcher after he shot and killed Steven Taylor at a Walmart in San Leandro, CA. Steven was suffering an apparent mental health crisis and was swinging a bat at Walmart customers. The cop worked for the San Leandro Police Department.
The fatal shooting was in April 2020. Steven was at the Walmart swinging a baseball bat at customers and employees. Cops were called.

Police arrived at the Walmart and told Steven to drop the bat, the suspect refused. Officer Fletcher tasered Steven and then shot him. Customers were heard screaming and yelling.

Steven died at the hospital from the gunshot wounds. Steven had mental health issues.
A criminal trail was brought against Officer Fletcher and the case dragged on for years. In December 2025 a judge dismissed the manslaughter case against Officer Fletcher after the prosecutor in the case filed a motion to dismiss citing it could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Officer Fletcher illegally killed Steven.

Officer Fletcher retired from the San Leandro Police Department before the criminal trial was dismissed.
