Nekime Oxendine is a Sergeant with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, in September 2026 he was arrested charged with the first degree murder of Adam Bean, 42, Adam was a captain with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Nekime and Adam had both dated a female cop identified as Tara Whitman. Tara is a lieutenant with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Sergeant Oxendine killed Captain Bean over the two arguing about being in a romantic relationship with Lieutenant Whitman.
Tara Whitman is the sister of the Highway Patrol Commander Freddy Johnson. Tara went back and forth in a dating relationship with Captain Adam and Sergeant Oxendine. Follow Charlotte Alerts on Instagram.
Tara dated Oxendine first then she broke up with him and entered a long term relationship with Captain Adam, she ended up staying in the same home with Adam. Tara then broke up with Captain Adam and got back in a romantic relationship with Sergeant Oxendine.
Tara and Captain Adam lived together for around 2 years in the same house. But in 2025 Tara broke up with Adam and jumped right back into a relationship with Sergeant Oxendine.

But jealousy was in the relationship, as Sergeant Oxendine asked Tara if Captain Adam looked better than him. Even in another text message Oxendine was mad that Tara let Captain Adam have the key to her heart.
On March 27, 2026 Captain Adam asked Tara to meet in person so they could talk. Tara agreed to meet and then she changed her mind and stopped responding to Captain Adam’s text messages.
At 10:40 at night Captain Adam came to Tara’s house anyway to talk. Sergeant Oxendine was in the house with Tara. Adam shouted that if Tara did not come outside he would beep the horn and cause a scene. Captain Adam was upset that Sergeant Oxendine’s truck was parked at Tara’s home.
Captain Adam continued moving towards Oxendine. At that point Sergeant Oxendine shot and killed Captain Adam. Tara ran to Captain Adam as he lay on the ground and began to administer mouth to mouth CPR, likely infuriating Sergeant Oxendine that her mouth was on Captain Adam’s once again.
Captain Adam died in Tara’s front yard. 911 was called, cops and paramedics arrived on scene. Sergeant Oxendine was not initially arrested.
It took 6 months for the State Bureau of Investigation to determine that criminal charges were appropriate for Sergeant Oxendine. The North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys also decided to prosecute and arrest Sergeant Oxendine.
In September 2026 police arrested Sergeant Oxendine charging him with murder. Leniency is given to police officers, unfairly so.
A judge ordered that Sergeant Oxendine be held without bond, he is being held in Moore County Jail.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol had this to say:
“The North Carolina State Highway Patrol understands that Sgt. Nekime Oxendine has been criminally charged. The Patrol respects the integrity of the judicial process. This is a difficult and tragic event for all involved. Sgt. Oxendine remains on administrative duty pending the outcome of the internal investigation.”
