SNOW AND ICE ON THE WAY TO CHARLOTTE

Date:

A snow and ice storm is on its way to Charlotte, NC. The snow storm is expected to hit Charlotte on Saturday night January 15, 2022 and last until Sunday night January 16, 2022. Snow accumulations are predicted at 1 to 3 inches.

Freezing rain and ice accumulations will bring black ice and slippery roads. The ice will land on tree branches and likely will cause them to break off and fall on power lines. Hence causing power outages for many. Officials are asking that people get groceries and supplies before the storm hits.

The N.C. Department of Transportation and contract crews are continuing preparations to handle the wintry mix.

In the Charlotte area, 133 transportation crews will use 288 trucks with as much as 125,000 gallons of brine to pre-treat about 2,000 lane miles.

Brine is a cost efficient mixture of salt and water that lowers the freezing temperatures on pavement and helps prevent ice from forming on roads. The solution of water and 23 percent salt is used to pretreat roadways in dry conditions when the temperature is above 18 degrees and can be applied up to 48 hours before a winter storm.

Contract crews are focusing pretreatment efforts on interstates in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties, and on the Monroe Expressway in Union County. State forces are applying brine on other bare pavement routes too.
