On October 24, 2023 Illinois State Trooper Dakotah Chapman-Green was shot in both of his legs allegedly by 37-year-old Cristobal Santana during a traffic stop in Springfield, IL.
Cristobal was a person of interest in the murder of his ex-girlfriend Adrianna Lopez. Trooper Dakotah pulled over Cristobal at 10:47 p.m. near an apartment complex.
At some point, the suspect was seen exiting his vehicle and firing several shots at the state trooper. The trooper ran away but was still shot multiple times in both legs.
The suspect then ran after the trooper on the side of a building and beat him in the face causing facial fractures, a skull fracture, and a brain bleed.
The suspect then ran back to his vehicle and fled the scene. The trooper was able to slowly limp back to his patrol vehicle and call for help.
Hours later around 2 a.m. cops were chasing after Cristobal, and in doing so a squad car hit the suspect as he was running on foot.
Cristobal was taken to the hospital and simultaneously charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm to a police officer, aggravated battery to a police officer, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
Cristobal and Trooper Dakotah remain in the hospital.
