The plane was taking off at 5 p.m. when engine problems did not allow the large MD-11 cargo plane to elevate, the UPS plane then lost control on the ground and flipped left causing a wing to hit the ground, break off, and then led to a full explosion of the plane, all while it was traveling by nitrogen filled wheels at high speeds. The plane had around 38,000 gallons of fuel on board.
A large explosion was seen with billowing layers of fire balls reaching far into the sky, reminiscent of a nuclear explosion or missile attack.
Dangerous plumes of thick black smoke and sprawling fire filled the area. A truck driver in the area witnessed the explosion and was seen in pure shock and terror. 9 people were killed on impact.
The crash damaged and set fire to nearby businesses. People had to jump out windows of some of the offices because the heat had melted and blocked the doors.
Also 15 people were injured, it is believed that of those injured included people on the plane and on land in the area.
The injuries include cuts, heavy burns, gashes, and other serious injuries.
The 16 people that are missing/unaccounted for were thrown from the crash or may be dead, further search and investigation will determine if they are still alive. The debris zone is large from the crash, extensive lifting and heavy duty tractor equipment will be necessary to search the ruble for survivors, similar to the 911 terror attacks.
The airport was completely shut down. The power company in the city LG&E de-energized power lines into a nearby station in light of the crash, which means services for around 290 customers are interrupted. They also isolated a portion of their gas system, impacting more than 90 customers.
