JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER IN CHARLOTTE SHUTTING DOWN, LOSS OF REVENUE

Date:

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office will discontinue operating the Mecklenburg County Juvenile Detention Center in Charlotte, NC on December 1, 2022.

Jail officials outlined in its budget submission to the Mecklenburg County Manager that juvenile detention operations are not a statutory mandated service that the jail has has to provide.

All juveniles currently housed at the Mecklenburg County Juvenile detention center will be transferred to other juvenile detention facilities in the state operated by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

The juvenile jail had to be considered for reduction to prioritize office mandates given the loss of revenue because of the depopulation efforts recommended by the State of North Carolina after inspections that found staffing at the detention center on East Trade Street inadequate.

Bugs were crawling on walls in the jail kitchen during a county health inspection.

Most jail employees will be eligible to transfer to other Mecklenburg County Detention roles and vacant positions.
