Date:

A compressed natural gas 18-wheeler truck exploded on I-77 north at 10:00 AM on October 19, 2024 in Charlotte, NC.

Something in the truck triggered the compressed natural gas to ignite a fire. The truck driver detected the issue early and hence pulled over near the entrance to the rest area on I-77 before the situation escalated.

The driver then exited the truck and maintained a safe distance. Within seconds the truck exploded and was fully engulfed in flames.

Due to the presence of compressed natural gas, the situation required careful handling.

Fire and emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire while ensuring the compressed natural gas tanks were properly cooled and that the relief valves functioned as designed, allowing the gas to safely vent.

Compressed natural gas is highly volatile, and without proper off gassing, it could result in a catastrophic explosion. The explosive fire shutdown traffic on I-77 in the area for nearly 24 hours.

The relief valves on the tanks safely released the gas to prevent further escalation. The Charlotte Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Unit were deployed to assist in managing the fire.

Their specialized expertise was essential in mitigating the potential risks posed by the fire and the hazardous materials involved.

To ensure public safety and environmental protection, the Mecklenburg County Environmental Department was notified and is conducting tests to assess any potential contamination of local storm drains due to runoff from the firefighting efforts.

The department will also assist in the cleanup process to mitigate any environmental impacts.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
