The family was living in a trailer park home. Rocky Mount had recently been having issues with added charges to light bills, which most people could not afford.

The dead family was behind on their light bill by $2,000 as Tracey was the only one working. Tracey tried to make partial payments to the power company, but only full payments were accepted.

The power company eventually turned off the lights to the residence. The family then purchased a gas generator to help restore some electricity. However, the generator created dangerous carbon monoxide fumes that seeped into the residence.
It is not known if the generator was inside or outside the residence. Other family members became suspicious when the dead victims would not return phone calls. 911 was called to the residence by family, and cops made forced entry to find Mahala, Tracey, and Kenny in the home dead.
