Cops illegally searched a man’s car and then arrested him, the man died in the back of cop car
On September 26, 2025 a man died in police custody in Charlotte, NC. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department is responsible for arresting the man.
This case is being investigated as an in custody death. On September 26th at 3:30 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle operating without a license plate on Eastway Drive. The male victim was driving the vehicle.

During the initial interaction, officers say they developed probable cause to search the man’s vehicle. But given the 4th Amendment protects from illegal search and seizure, it is likely that the police did not have a valid reason to search the man’s car, especially since an arrest had not been made yet.
CMPD is very poor minded when it comes to following the constitution and making illegal arrests and illegal searches. Cops can’t search or detain someone for the smell of marijuana alone, hence CBD smells identical to marijuana.
The victim was removed from the vehicle and secured in the rear passenger compartment of a police patrol vehicle while officers conducted the illegal search.
While the man was handcuffed in the police car, he began to shake and convulse. Medic responded and transported the man to a hospital. The man was pronounced deceased.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is the lead investigating agency in the case.
