30-year-old Demonte Sherrill died on May 18, 2023 in an apartment complex construction fire on Liberty Row Drive Charlotte, NC. The apartment was being built in the luxury South Park area. Demonte was a father of four children, ages 5 to 13.
Over 100 workers made it to safety in time. 15 workers had to be rescued.
A crane operator spotted Demonte and another employee trapped on the 7th floor of the apartment site. The operator tried to move the crane basket to the victims to save them, but the smoke became so thick and black that visibility was zero.
Demonte is seen on a Facebook live video stuck on the 7th floor with a co-worker during the fire, Demonte yells for help, but no one hears him.
Demonte died in the fire along with his co-worker. The other deceased victim has not been identified yet.
Demonte’s boss called his family and told them that Demonte was killed in the fire.
