TEEN PLEADS GUILTY TO MURDERING ROCKY RIVER HIGH FOOTBALL PLAYER

A college level football player was murdered by a teenager, many students at Rocky River High have ended up dead

On November 10, 2025 Tyzavian Smith, 19, pled guilty to the second degree murder of Shemar Hayes, 23, in Charlotte, NC. Shemar was a stellar football player in high school and college.

Shemar was shot and killed on Red Hickory Lane Charlotte, NC on March 12, 2024 at noon.

Shemar died on the scene. On March 27th Smith was located at his residence. A standoff began because the suspect failed to come outside for arrest.

The SWAT team was called. It took hours for Tyzavian to exit the home and surrender.  The suspect was then transported to police headquarters to be interviewed by detectives.

At the conclusion of the interview, Tyzavian was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Jail and charged with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Shemar attended Rocky River High School and graduated in 2019. He played wide receiver and earned a scholarship to Louisburg College on March 22, 2019. Rocky River High School has had many students that were murdered or killed over the years, including some teachers arrested on child sex relations charges.

At his November 2025 trial, Smith pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 157-201 months in prison.
