Michael Crumbley, 58, was murdered at the Tyrrell Prison Work Farm in Columbia, NC. Michael was attacked by several inmates during a fight inside the prison. Michael was an inmate at the prison, he died on June 14, 2023.
On June 9, 2023 Michael was assaulted by several inmates. Guards broke up the fight and Michael was found on the floor badly injured. Paramedics were called and took Michael to the hospital.
On June 14, 2023 Michael died at the hospital from the assault injuries.
The Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Department was notified and is investigating, as is the State Bureau of Investigation.
The Department of Adult Correction has launched an internal investigation.
Michael was serving a 12 year sentence for a 2018 conviction in Cleveland County as a habitual felon and drug possession. His projected release date was Jan. 7, 2026. He was a minimum custody offender at the prison.
