On November 29, 2021 Richard Richards, 61, was shot and killed at a Lowe’s home improvement store in Tucson, Arizona. Richard was in a wheelchair. The situation started in a Walmart over a shoplifting claim.
At 6 p.m. Richard was accused of stealing from a Walmart. A Walmart security guard approached Richard and demanded a receipt; Richard is accused of saying, “here is my receipt” and then allegedly pulled out a knife.
Richard continued in his wheelchair throughout the Walmart parking lot. Police arrive on scene and Richard is seen rolling in the parking lot of a Lowe’s home improvement store next door to the Walmart. As Richard is going into the Lowe’s Tucson Police Officer Ryan Remington shoots Richard nine times.
Richard falls out of his wheelchair and onto the ground slumped over. Richard died on the scene. A female officer was also on the scene during the shooting and had her gun drawn, but the female officer never fired her gun.
Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus released a statement saying:
“To be very clear, I am deeply disturbed and troubled by Officer Remington’s actions. His use of deadly force in this incident is a clear violation of department policy and directly contradicts multiple aspects of our use of force and training.
As a result, the department moved earlier today to terminate Officer Remington.”
Officer Remington was fired one day after the deadly shooting.
