Illinois State Police killed 24-year-old Jalen Carpenter in Chicago, Illinois in April 2026. Video of the encounter was caught on home surveillance and body cam footage.
Around 10:50 p.m. on April 15th Jalen and his girlfriend were having an argument. Jalen walked away on the street. His girlfriend called police and said he had a gun. Cops approached Jalen on the street and tried to take his gun unlawfully.
Jalen held on to his gun and a shot was fired. It is unclear if Jalen intentionally or unintentionally fired the shot, as he was in a tussle with cops.
Cops on scene then shot Jalen dead. The officers are on administrative status while the Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation investigates the case.
