Simpsonville, SC teenager Miguel Cano pleaded guilty on October 14, 2019 to voluntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of his mother. Miguel killed his mother 44-year-old Isabel Cristina Zuluaga in 2015.
Cristina was found inside her home by a contractor.
The coroner said Cristina was stabbed to death. Miguel stabbed his mother over 28 times. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office arrested her son Miguel, then 13 years old, in the killing. Miguel admitted to the killing at the time of his arrest.
On Monday, Miguel received a 23-year sentence after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Several doctors found Miguel to be on the autism spectrum.
A judge found Miguel guilty but mentally ill. He will be incarcerated at Kirkland Correctional Institution.
