On November 3, 2021 several students were arrested during a fight at Hopewell High School in Huntersville, NC. 2 guns were found during the fight. 5 students total were arrested.
And as a result, Hopewell High School was placed on lockdown. The fight was in the afternoon. The fight started after a student was robbed by the gun tooting students earlier in the day. The retaliatory fight began, and a gun from one of the students fell on the ground, along with several bullets. Police were able to seize that gun.
Police were able to identify all the students involved in the fight through the in-school camera system. Another student had a second gun, which was loaded.
That gun was seized too. Both of the guns were reported stolen. The guns seized were a loaded Phoenix Arms .22 pistol and a Glock Model 34 9mm pistol.
The five arrested students included four boys and one girl, they have all been charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds. Their ages are 17, 17, 17, 16, and 15.
The principal of the school sent this letter to parents:
“This is Principal Pickard with an important message about incidents that occurred at our school today. We received information that led to a lockdown and a search by law enforcement for a firearm on campus. During the search, a firearm was found in a student’s book bag. Dismissal was delayed for some of our students.”
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Earnest Winston released the following statement:
“I am concerned and I know I’m not alone. Guns are coming into our schools from homes and our streets. We must address this problem, but also the underlying issues that are leading to school-age adolescents getting access to guns in the first place. We must get guns out of young people’s hands.
