23-year-old Jakeem Brunson committed suicide during a SWAT standoff on September 11, 2023 at the intersection of Albemarle Road and E. WT Harris Boulevard Charlotte, NC. Jeremy Asbury, 31, also committed suicide during a SWAT stand-off on August 29, 2023 in Charlotte. September 11th is the memorial day for the terrorist attacks that occurred over 20 years ago where Islamic extremists suicide bombers flew planes into the World Trad Centers and the Pentagon.
Shortly after 10 a.m., on Monday, September 11, 2023 cops located Jakeem armed with a weapon on Albemarle Road. Jakeem had several warrants for his arrest including assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Jakeem refused to follow commands of officers to drop his firearm, instead the suspect positioned himself against the wall of a business.
Officers attempted to deescalate the situation while calling for the SWAT Team, crisis negotiators and K-9 unit to assist. Officers continued to engage in dialogue with the suspect for seven hours.Preliminary information indicates that shortly before 5:30 p.m., the suspect sat down his firearm. SWAT Team officers deployed distraction devices to divert the attention of the suspect. The suspect quickly regained possession of his firearm.Jakeem then shot himself in the chest, he was transported to an area hospital with life threatening injuries. Jakeem died at the hospital.
No officers fired their service weapons.
