EX-MINNESOTA COP DEREK CHAUVIN FOUND GUILTY OF MURDERING GEORGE FLOYD

On April 20, 2021 ex-Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murdering George Floyd. Derek was found guilty on all 3 counts including 2nd degree murder, 3rd degree murder, and manslaughter. Derek’s bail was revoked and he was taken directly into custody, although his sentencing will be at a later date.

Protests and riots over George’s murder spread all across the United States. Businesses were destroyed and looted, glass was broken and merchandise was stolen. People were shot by non-lethal weapons and pepper sprayed during the riots and protests. The chaos lasted for weeks in the United States.

George Floyd was killed in May 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota by Derek. The police was called on George over a fake $20 bill. 3 police officers arrived including Derek. George was unarmed and placed in handcuffs. George was placed on the ground and Derek is seen on video putting his knee on George’s neck for more than 9 minutes.

George told Derek several times that he couldn’t breathe, but Derek kept his knee on George’s neck. George eventually died on scene. The city of Minneapolis in 2021 reached a $27 million settlement with George’s family over his murder.

Second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. Third-degree murder has a maximum of 25 years, and the manslaughter charge has a maximum of 10 years.
