North Carolina Central University mourns the loss of men’s basketball student athlete Devin Butts, who passed away on Friday, May 5, 2023 at the age of 22. Devin was a star player on the NCCU basketball team in Durham, NC.
Devin died unexpectedly, he was found unresponsive by friends.
Devin is a native of Macon, Georgia, and averaged 5.4 points in 17 appearances this past season for NCCU. Devin was on track to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Behavioral and Social Sciences this summer.
Devin was 6 foot 5 inches tall. Devin played the forward position. He previously played at New Mexico Junior College (2021-22) and Louisiana (2020-21).
North Carolina Central University released this statement:
“We are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Devin. This is a devastating tragedy for our team, fans, and the entire NCCU community. Devin will always be remembered as an incredible teammate that had an infectious smile at all times. Our heartfelt condolences are with his family and those who were blessed to know him.”
Former NCCU student Kian Brown died on May 2, 2023. Kian had a medical emergency of some sort.
Kian Brown died, he was the Student Government President of NCCU in the 2003-2004 school year
