71-year-old inmate Elijah Kelly died at the Mecklenburg County Detention on December 14, 2023. The jail is located at 801 East Fourth Street Charlotte, NC.
On December 14th at 4:34 am, a medical emergency was called by a detention officer in the housing unit where Elijah was assigned.
Elijah was discovered to be unresponsive. Detention personnel promptly started resuscitation efforts and continued until emergency medical personnel arrived.
At 4:51 am, the Charlotte Fire Department and Mecklenburg EMS arrived and continued resuscitation efforts.

The State Bureau of Investigation will conduct a in custody death investigation as the medical examiner determines the cause of death.
