I-85 is iced. Ice covered roads are a sight to see on streets and highways in Charlotte. Charlotte’s roads are basically a giant ice rink right now
Snow and sleet finally fell in Charlotte, NC and surrounding areas on January 25, 2026. The snow and sleet was delayed multiple times with predictions first stating snow would fall early Saturday to the evening, to midnight Sunday. But snow did not fall until 3 or 4 a.m. on Jan. 25th. Light snow fell less than .25 inches. The majority of the white sheets that is seen in pictures is from ice, sleet, and freezing rain. The temperature in Charlotte is only 20 degrees, so that allows the ground to be cold enough for the precipitation to attach and accumulate on the ground without melting.
Any temperature above 32 will cause precipitation to melt on the roads. There have been few accidents on highways and back roads.
Black ice is expected to be a problem at night time and over bridges. There have been reports of around 500 people without power in Charlotte. Last year a man was murdered in the snow.
Ice accumulation is expected to bring down trees and power lines in some areas.
