MECKLENBURG COUNTY JAIL DETENTION OFFICER ARRESTED AFTER FIGHT WITH INMATE

On August 27, 2020 Mecklenburg County Jail Detention Officer Darryl Shavers was arrested on felony assault charges stemming from an incident on August 20, 2020 at the jail in Charlotte, NC.

Officer Shavers is accused of attacking a jail inmate while working in a inmate housing unit. The confrontation began as a verbal dispute.

However, the situation escalated when the inmate threw an empty paper cup at Officer Shavers.

Officer Shavers then initiated physical contact with the inmate. Officer Shavers submitted a written report regarding his application of force but allegedly failed to disclose sufficient details depicting the full facts of the incident as it was clearly captured on video, officials say.

Officer Shaver’s employment with the Mecklenburg County Jail began on June 5, 2019 and he was terminated on August 27, 2020.
