STATE BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION EXAMINING DEATH OF INMATE AT MECKLENBURG JAIL

Date:

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is currently investigating the death of 51-year-old Michael Mangan, a inmate housed at the Mecklenburg County Jail at 801 E. Fourth Street Charlotte, NC.

Michael was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 5:38 a.m. on July 12, 2020. After CPR was performed by staff and first responders Micheal was pronounced deceased at approximately 6:23 a.m.

Michael was brought into the jail on Friday, July 10, 2020 and did not display any symptoms of COVID-19 jail officials say. The jail admits that Michael was not yet placed in general housing as all non-symptomatic residents are placed in Pod 3200 for five days prior to being reassigned.

The SBI will continue a thorough investigation as the medical examiner determines the cause of death.

In March 2020 another inmate died at the same Mecklenburg County Jail.
