MECKLENBURG JAIL INMATE DIES DURING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, FOUND UNRESPONSIVE

A Mecklenburg County jail inmate died on March 18, 2020, the inmate is 45-year old Willie Burks. Willie was an inmate at the jail on 801 East Fourth Street Charlotte, NC.

Several inmates at the Mecklenburg County Jail died from a period of 2018-2019.

Officials say Willie was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 10:30 a.m. on March 18th. The jail says CPR was performed by staff and first responders, but Willie was transported to Atrium Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 11:09 a.m.

Willie has been in custody at the detention center since June 6, 2019. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will conduct a thorough investigation as the medical examiner determines the cause of death, officials say.
