A student at Butler High School was shot and killed today and later died at the hospital. The school is located in Matthews, NC.
The shooting took place at the beginning of the school day in the main hall of the school. Officials say a fight broke out and the shooting happened as a result of the fight.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) released this statement following the announcement that the student died:
> Our hearts are with the family, loved ones, friends and everyone affected by the tragedy which occurred this morning at Butler High School. Counseling is available to any student or staff who wishes to speak to someone. The Butler High School community and CMS appreciates the support of the entire community during this difficult time. CMS will provide updates throughout today, as warranted.
Students who witnessed the fight say one of the students involved in the fight was shot in the back by the other student.
The school was placed on lockdown but has since been lifted. The shooter, who is another student at the school, has been taken into custody.
