On April 30, 2020 the Concord Police Department charged Kayla Mitchell with Involuntary Manslaughter and Felony Child Abuse following the death of her 3-month old daughter.
On April 4, 2020 at approximately 9:17 a.m., a 911 call was made regarding an unresponsive 3-month old infant at a residence in Concord, NC. Despite receiving prompt medical attention, the infant was later pronounced deceased.
The investigation revealed that the child died of asphyxiation as a result of co-sleeping. Kayla has been the focus of prior investigations by the Cabarrus County Department of Social Services (DSS) relating to co-sleeping with her other children.
The investigation was reviewed by the Cabarrus County District Attorney’s office and it concurred with the department’s belief that criminal charges were warranted. Accordingly, charges were filed against Kayla for Involuntary Manslaughter and Felony Child Abuse.
