Inmate Kevin R. Taylor, Jr., 23, died Saturday afternoon February 29, 2020 from injuries sustained in a fight with another inmate at Eastern Correctional Institution in Maury, NC.
Kevin was struck with a homemade weapon in a housing unit around 1:15 p.m. Staff responded and provided medical attention. EMS arrived and pronounced Kevin dead at 1:27 p.m.
Kevin was a close-custody offender housed in the regular population. He was serving a 5-year, 5-month prison sentence for robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was admitted to prison on Jan. 1, 2019 after he was convicted in Mecklenburg County.
The other offender who was involved in the incident was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The death is under internal investigation. The prison was placed on lock down.
