On September 6, 2022 an inmate at the Mecklenburg County Jail was confirmed to have the Monkeypox viral disease. Jail officials confirmed this as the first case of an inmate in the jail with Monkeypox.

An inmate at the jail was seen during a scheduled health and physical examination, and was found to have Monkeypox.
A Monkeypox protocol was implemented in early August 2022 in consultation with the contracted healthcare services provider of the jail, the provider is Wellpath.
The protocol was implemented to align with best practices and CDC guidelines for the high risk congregate setting of a jail environment.
Isolation protocols have also been established designed to mitigate the spread of Monkeypox. Wellpath continues to test and medically evaluate the jail inmate population who are suspected to have monkeypox.
