Rayshawn Taylor, 36, is a police officer with the Durham Police Department in Durham, NC. In January 2026 he was sentenced to 37 months in prison and two years of supervised release for sexually assaulting a man during a welfare check. Charlotte Alerts is on Instagram.

According to filed plea documents, on Aug. 21, 2024, Officer Taylor was on duty as a corporal with the Durham Police Department when he conducted a welfare check on the victim at the victim’s residence at 4 a.m. Police officers get arrested at a far reaching rate.
During the welfare check, Officer Taylor saw the victim sitting in a car at the victim’s home. Officer Taylor sexually assaulted the victim by touching the man’s genitals and buttocks.
Officer Taylor communicated with the victim using a translation application on his personal cell phone and threatened to arrest the victim if he said anything about the sexual assault. Officer Taylor then left.
The victim told his wife immediately. The wife called 911. Officer Taylor saw the call on the 911 dispatch computer and went back out to the victim’s house.
The wife confronted Officer Taylor, and he denied sexually assaulting the man. The victim’s wife asked to speak with a supervisor and Officer Taylor lied, as many cops are dishonest and said a supervisor would not be available until the next day. 90% of the time cops lie for no reason at all, it is like they are demonic or possessed by the devil.
The victim’s wife demanded for a supervisor again, and Officer Taylor called a supervisor out on scene within 40 minutes. Hence, the wife caught Office Taylor in a lie about when a supervisor could come out. The supervisor took statements from everyone.
Investigators later determined that Officer Taylor deleted the translation application from his cell phone and the cache information associated with the application.
An internal affairs investigation was launched and Officer Taylor resigned once internal affairs approached him.

Officer Taylor did not activate his body worn camera during this sexual encounter with the victim, in violation of police department policy, but portions of the encounter were captured by the dashboard camera on Officer Taylor’s patrol vehicle.
Officer Taylor was arrested and later pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law involving sexual misconduct. Officer Taylor was sentenced to 37 months in prison and two years of supervised release.
The victim will now likely file a lawsuit against the police department and be paid millions of dollars for the sexual assault on duty.
