CHARLOTTE POLICE CHIEF RETIRING, WILL RETURN FOR REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney will retire by the end of the 2019, the department has thousands of officers.

Charlotte, NC officials said Chief Putney will officially retire on Jan. 1, 2020, but is expected to return in March as chief to help work through the Republican National Convention when it comes to Charlotte in August 2020. 

Chief Putney made a steady impact on crime in Charlotte and the community. He took the role as chief in 2015.

Mayor Vi Lyles says Chief Putney is retiring to spend more time with his family.

The last CMPD police chief retired and took a six figure job at Coca-Cola as head of security.
