ACTIVE JUDGE DIES FROM LIVER CANCER, KNOWN FOR CREATING DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAMS

Judge Ola Lewis died on December 29, 2019 after a long battle with inoperable liver cancer. Judge Lewis served as senior resident superior court judge in Brunswick County, NC since 2003.

During her time as a judge, Judge Lewis promoted a number of innovative programs, including drug treatment and mental health courts, that served as models throughout the state and across the nation.

She previously served judicial districts in Bladen, Brunswick and, Columbus county. She was first appointed district court judge in 1993, and previously served as an assistant district attorney. Among her many accolades during her long career, she received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
