$250,000 IN METHAMPHETAMINE SEIZED AT IMMIGRATION CHECKPOINT

Date:

Yuma, Arizona Border Patrol agents arrested two United States citizens at the Interstate 8 Immigration Checkpoint after discovering nearly 90 pounds of methamphetamine hidden throughout their vehicle Tuesday afternoon.

Agents referred the driver of a red Chevrolet Blazer to the secondary inspection area. While in secondary, a U.S. Border Patrol canine alerted to an odor it was trained to detect emitting from the vehicle. Agents searched the vehicle and located 80 packages of methamphetamine hidden throughout the vehicle. The narcotics were valued at $256,800.

The female driver, a 26-year-old United States citizen from Yuma, was arrested on drug smuggling charges. The female passenger, a 24-year-old United States citizen from Idaho, was also arrested.

Federal law allows agents to charge individuals by complaint, a method that allows the filing of criminal activity charges without inferring guilt. An individual is presumed innocent unless and until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
