Carrington Thomas

Carrington was homeless with a reported history of substance use disorder including using crack cocaine. On June 8, 2022 Carrington was found dead and slumped over behind a convenience store dumpster on West Sugar Creek Road.

Carrington’s brain was swollen and edematous.

First responders arrived and pronounced Carrington dead at the scene.

There was no obvious trauma or suspicion for foul play. There were two portions of a white powder substance in folded papers found in Carrington’s clothing.

Postmortem toxicology reveals the presence of fentanyl and methamphetamine in Carrington’s blood. Fentanyl is a potent opioid analgesic that is medically approved and prescribed for severe pain syndromes in the United States. It is also found in illicit preparations of drugs sold to users as heroin or prescription opiates.

Methamphetamine was also detected in Carrington’s blood. Methamphetamine is a potent stimulant medication approved and rarely prescribed for conditions such as narcolepsy, obesity, and attention deficit disorder.

Methamphetamine is more often produced and used illicitly for its stimulant and mind altering effects.

A review of Carrington’s records in the North Carolina Controlled Substance Reporting System shows that he had no prescriptions for fentanyl or methamphetamine containing medications.

Cocaine and its metabolite, benzoylecgonine, were also detected in Carrington’s blood. Finally, ethanol and cocaethylene, a byproduct formed in the body when cocaine and ethanol are consumed in a short time period, were also detected in Carrington’s blood.

The combined use of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and ethanol markedly increases the risk of sudden death due to respiratory and central nervous system depression, as well as the cardiovascular and cardiotoxic effects of cocaine, its metabolites, and methamphetamine

Hence, the official cause of death for Carrington is fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and ethanol toxicity.
