43-year-old George Benfield died at the Mecklenburg County Jail located at 801 East Fourth Street Charlotte, NC on January 20, 2024. George was an inmate at the jail.
George was arrested on January 19, 2024, at 8:17 pm. After being processed, he was then moved to a jail cell at 1:45 am on January 20th.
At 3:09 am, a medical emergency was called by a detention officer in the housing unit where George was assigned after he was discovered to be unresponsive.
Lifesaving measures were administered, George was transported to Atrium Main Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:06 am.
The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will conduct a thorough in-custody death investigation as the medical examiner determines the cause of death. Multiple jail deaths have occurred under the current sheriff of Mecklenburg County.
