The Charlotte Mecklenburg School system is now in hot water with the FBI after they wrongfully fired Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill for convenience. Dr. Hill was the best thing to ever happen for CMS
In October 2026 the Federal Bureau of Investigation began investigating the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education fired Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill on September 23, 2026. Follow Charlotte Alerts on Instagram.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI have an active investigation on Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. The investigation stems from suspect contracts worth over $500,000 to former CMS executive Raki McGregor.

Raki is a friend of former CMS Board of Education Chair Stephanie Sneed. Speculation was made after CMS awarded a law firm hundreds of thousands of dollars in school contracts. The law firm then paid Raki large amounts of cash to perform the consultation and instruction duties that CMS sought from the law firm. Some of the contracts paid Raki $30,000 a month.
Dr. Crystal Hill raised concerns over the contracts while she was superintendent and then the school board suspended her. The school board found no wrong doing on Dr. Hill but they still proceeded to fire her from the postilion, citing convenience. Student test scores were up in CMS under Dr. Hills leadership.
Now Dr. Melissa Balknight is the interim superintendent of CMS. After all the shake ups and turmoil The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI chose to investigate CMS.
Specifics on the investigation and any arrests are forth coming. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the state auditor’s office are investigating CMS per the suspicious contracts for conflict of interests claims.
