Johnson C. Smith University student Lance Grant died on Christmas Eve December 24, 2025 in Florida. Lance was a freshman at the university in Charlotte, NC and he played on the football team. Follow Charlotte Alerts on Instagram.

Lance died from unknown causes off campus close to his family, as the school was on Christmas break and closed. Sadly most of Lance’s friends and family members got news of his death on Christmas morning. Multiple students and alumni of black colleges have died this year.

A cause of death has not been mentioned yet. Surprisingly the Johnson C. Smith University football team won the CIAA championship in 2025. The team had been sub par for years with multiple losing seasons and no bowl appearances over the years.

Johnson C. Smith University has been in the news in the past. Back in 2015 multiple students had been allegedly hazed by members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity at Johnson C. Smith University.
The student victim advised he had met with members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity at various locations during the pledging process. The student victim was struck with an object numerous times by fraternity members at various locations both on and off the campus of Johnson C. Smith University, court documents said.
During several of the encounters the victim sustained severe injuries. The victim was even evaluated and treated at Novant Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews, NC for his injuries and notified police of the alleged hazing. Multiple Omega frat members were arrested in 2015 after the victim told police.
