U.S. Postal Service worker Irene Pressley, 64, was shot and killed while on her delivery route.
Irene was found dead on September 23, 2019 in Williamsburg County, SC.
U.S. Postal Inspection Service spokeswoman Jessica Adams said Irene was killed while she was working. It’s unclear whether she was inside a mail carrier’s vehicle when she was shot.
Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight said Irene’s death appears to be a homicide.
An autopsy is being performed to determine Irene’s official cause of death. At the moment there is no suspect or motive. When a suspect is found they could face a federal death penalty.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is assisting with the investigation.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service released the following statement:
“Postal Inspectors are actively involved in this ongoing investigation into the death of rural letter carrier Irene Pressley.
Ms. Pressley was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 22 years. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service takes the security and well-being of USPS employees very seriously.”
