Whoever thought singing at church could get you arrested or ticketed?

The state of California has banned singing and chanting activities at churches as of July 1, 2020. California churches must discontinue singing, chanting, and other practices and performances in rehearsals and services, where there is increased likelihood for transmission of the Coronavirus from contaminated exhaled droplets.

California has had more than 24,000 Coronavirus cases. Singing at church services has proven to be one way to spread a virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The state of California says that the signing ban is enforceable. Violators can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

In addition to discontinuing singing and chanting, churches must not have more than 100 people or 25% capacity in attendance during services or church activities.

In an order the state’s Department of Public Health said:

“Practices and performances present an increased likelihood for transmission of COVID-19 through contaminated exhaled droplets and should occur through alternative methods like internet streaming.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered several counties in California to halt indoor restaurant dining and close movie theaters, card rooms, indoor museums and other venues.
