David Bruton Smith, 46, is the CEO of Fortune 500 company Sonic Automotive in Charlotte, NC. David was arrested on October 5, 2020 on domestic violence charges against a woman.
David is the son of the iconic Speedway Motorsports CEO Bruton Smith. David is accused of strangling and holding a 22-year-old woman against her will late Sunday night on October 4 at a home on Carmel Park Road in south Charlotte; it is no surprise that Carmel Park Road is a rather wealthy area.
Officials say the female victim had some scratches and bruises on her. The woman was treated at the scene and is expected to be okay. Officials say, the victim stated that David assaulted and unlawfully restrained her without her consent.
David was arrested on scene and charged with assault by strangulation, false imprisonment, assault on a female, and interfere with emergency communication.
David was elected as the Chief Executive Officer of Sonic in September 2018 and also serves as a director and an officer of Sonic Financial Corporation, according to Sonic Automotive.
David told the Sonic Automotive Board of Directors that he is innocent of these charges and expects to be fully exonerated.
A judge set the multi-millionaire David’s bonds at $10,000 secured each for the charges of assault by strangulation, false imprisonment and assault on a female totaling $30,000.
