Officer Gerasimos Athans, 32, was shot and nearly killed by an arrestee. The shooting was in McKeesport, Pennsylvania on December 20, 2020.
Koby Francis, 22, is the shooter and was under arrest for a restraining order violation. Koby was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser. Once the officer arrived at the police station, Koby had managed to contort his hands to the front of his body and grab a concealed gun on his waist, all while still in handcuffs.
As Officer Athans opens the vehicle door, Koby immediately shoots Officer Athans several times and then runs off, never to be found. The officer was shot once in the neck and twice in the shoulder. Officer Athans is in the hospital undergoing treatment.
The suspect fled the scene and has not been caught.
