A Maryland bank teller has been arrested in connection with a home invasion and assault at the residence of a 78-year-old customer who made several large cash withdrawals in recent weeks.
Nathan Newell, 19, was arrested on November 13, 2019 at Freedom Federal Credit Union in Bel Air, MD and charged with robbery, first- and third-degree burglary, first and second degree assault and home invasion. Nathan told police he attempted the robbery because he was “tired of working two jobs.”
Nathan has now been fired from Freedom Federal Credit Union.
On November 11, 2019 at 8:30 p.m. Nathan went to the victim’s residence and knocked, the victim answered the door and Nathan allegedly forced his way into the home demanding cash. Nathan observed the elderly bank customer make several large cash withdrawals from the bank on previous occasions.
The victim’s 57-year-old female relative intervened when she heard the commotion and suffered minor injuries during the struggle.
The woman placed Nathan in a headlock and then attempted to shoot him with an unloaded gun, but Nathan fled the scene and was apprehended two days later while at work.
Following the attack, the 78-year-old victim was treated at a local hospital for a broken leg, a bruised orbital area, two loose teeth and heart issues.
