An offender at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, NC died on Aug. 18 in an alleged apparent suicide.
Offender Kyle Berry, 40, was found unresponsive in his cell at 3:41 pm. Custody and facility medical staff began immediate life-saving procedures. Outside EMS was called to the facility and Kyle was declared deceased at approximately 3:52 p.m.
Kyle was originally serving two sentences on Death Row for the 1998 death of 16 year-old Theresa Fetter in New Hanover County, NC. But Kyle was removed from Death Row in 2010 after a court appeal.
North Carolina Department of Public Safety officials are cooperating with local law enforcement from Bertie County and Windsor as they conduct the investigation.
A male inmate died at the Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte, NC back in April 2019.
