A newborn baby boy was found crying inside a trash can in a church parking lot on July 16, 2020 in Wilmington, NC. A woman was walking her dog when she heard the cries of a baby coming from a trash can. She looked inside to find a baby boy in a garbage bag. The woman started yelling and called 911.
The baby still had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. The baby was rushed to the hospital, where he is now doing well.
The mother is unknown and has not been located.
Under North Carolina Safe Surrender law, parents can give up a newborn baby up to seven days old anonymously to either a health care provider, law enforcement officer, social services worker or emergency medical personnel.
