Vernita Jones, 27, is the woman that pleaded guilty to killing her 6-month-old son in Johnston, South Carolina. Vernita was sentenced on September 17, 2020 to 30 years in prison. Vernita pleaded guilty to homicide by child abuse in the death of her son, Anthony Frost.
On November 24, 2018 friends of Vernita became concerned when they saw her without the baby around the apartment complex where she lived. Vernita told her friends that the child was being watched by another family member in Florida.
But when authorities approached Vernita about baby Anthony missing, she sang a different deadly tune. Under pressure Vernita admitted to suffocating her son and then dumping the child’s body in a trash bin behind an apartment complex. The baby’s dead body was found in a Greenville County, SC landfill.
Vernita said she killed her son because the father of the baby was not responding to her text messages.
In court Vernita’s defense team asked for leniency arguing that she was essentially born a crack baby, was raped, abandoned, and had a string of bad boyfriends.
The father of baby Anthony asked the court to give Vernita life in prison.
