A 17-year-old female died on at a home on Ligon Court Charlotte, NC on April 24, 2020. The teen girl was mentally disabled and drowned in a bathtub. The teen’s caregiver, Nikiya Meeks, 41, was arrested upon the drowning.
On Friday, April 24, 2020, at around 1:08 p.m., officers responded to a residence. When they arrived, they located a 17 year old juvenile female victim who had drowned in a bathtub. Paramedics responded to the scene and performed CPR on the victim.
The victim was then transported to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center – Main where she was later pronounced deceased at 6:03p.m.
Homicide Unit and Crimes Against Children Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.
The investigation has revealed that the victim was severely mentally and physically disabled and was living at this residence with her paid caregiver, Nikiya Meeks.
Nikiya was interviewed by detectives at the Law Enforcement Center. At the conclusion of the interview Nikiya was charged with Patient Abuse – Culpably Negligent Conduct Causing Death and transferred to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
