Nigel Brown, 21, was killed on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at approximately 3:33 a.m. in Charlotte, NC during a hit and run car accident. James Winston, 22, was charged with the murder of Nigel. James is accused of DWI and running from the scene of the crash.
The crash was on Wilkinson Boulevard and involved two vehicles.
James was allegedly driving an Acura at a high rate of speed when it struck the Toyota that Nigel was driving. The collision killed Nigel on scene.
James allegedly fled the scene on foot and left the vehicle at the crash site.
James was later caught and arrested. It was determined that the 2014 Acura that James was allegedly operating was reported stolen in Charlotte on February 4, 2020 officials say. The investigation further determined that James was allegedly driving while impaired; also his license was in a revoked status, and he had an open container of an alcoholic beverage in the vehicle officials say.
Excessive speed, recklessness and alcohol are contributing factors in this crash for the suspect. Speed is not a factor for Nigel and alcohol test results are pending.
James was taken to Atrium Hospital-Main where he is being treated for his injuries. Arrest warrants for James have been issued for 2nd Degree Murder, Felony Death by Motor Vehicle, Felony Hit and Run, Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Reckless Driving, Driving While License Revoked, Possession of Marijuana, DWI, and for Open Container (Liquor).
The warrants will be served upon James being released from the hospital.
